NEW HAVEN – Interstate 95 in New Haven reopened Sunday afternoon after a toppled tractor trailer carrying bananas closed down the northbound lanes of the highway for several hours.

Traffic began moving again short after 2 p.m. The State Police closed down all northbound lanes in West Haven as crews attempted to upright a full-loaded trailer that rolled over along Long Wharf in New Haven in a heavy fog at about 9 a.m.

Bystanders said several lanes of the roadway initially remained open but police entirely closed down the artery soon after, as authorities brought in heavy wreckers. Straps were attached to the trailer and, at about 1:30, authorities succeeded in getting the vehicle onto its wheels.

No major injuries were reported, but the State Department of Transportation reported a major backup of more than seven miles. Travelers were alerted to the problem by electronic road signs but thousands of motorists were suck in stand-still traffic into Orange.
