TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A scary accident on Terre Haute's northside this morning during rush hour. Shortly before 7:30 am a tanker truck collided with a passenger vehicle near the Fruitridge and Maple avenue intersection.

The momentum of the tanker truck pushed the vehicle several hundred feet coming to a rest on Fruitridge avenue next to Terre Haute North High School. Police tell WIBQ that there was a person extricated from inside the passenger vehicle and one person was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, but they would not comment further on any injuries at this time.

Vigo County School Corporation officials say that no Terre Haute North High School faculty members or students were involved in the accident. Some faculty members helped rescue workers by controlling the rush hour traffic so the emergency helicopter could land on the scene. Some students and school buses had to be re-routed to the Maple avenue entrance of the high school to attend their classes.

Police have identified the driver of the tanker truck as Timothy Clark, 50, of Franklin, Indiana. Clark was transported to a Terre Haute hospital for a drug screen, which revealed a positive drug test for cocaine. He admitted to the police he had been falling asleep on the road between Indianapolis and Terre Haute.

Clark has been arrested and charged with criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury and operating while intoxicated. There could be additional or modified charges against Clark after authorities learn the condition of the driver of the SUV that Clark hit.

The driver of the SUV has yet to be identified.
